Below are detailed instructions about procedures for extension of temporary residence for foreigners who wish to continue to stay in Vietnam after end of their permitted temporary residence duration.

There are a lot of reasons why foreigners wish to extend their temporary stay in Vietnam, including reasons related to their work, families, unexpected events, or even keeping themselves away from Covid-19 disease.

1	Requirements for grant of permission for extension of temporary residence	-  Any foreigner who is temporarily residing in Vietnam wishes to have the temporary residence status extended; - If any foreigner needs extension of their temporary residence, he/she must seek consent from foreigner inviting or sponsoring organizations in Vietnam to submit his/her notification/application for temporary residence extension.	- Foreigners who are granted NG1, NG2 or NG4 visas wish to have their temporary residence duration extended; - If any foreigner needs extension of their temporary residence, he/she must seek consent from foreigner inviting or sponsoring organizations in Vietnam to submit his/her notification/application for temporary residence extension.    *Notes:  The application must be submitted by foreign inviting or sponsoring organizations, applying for an extension of no more than 12 months provided that the extended duration of his/her temporary residence is at least 30 days left to the expiry date of his/her passport.
2	Decision-making body	Immigration authorities affiliated to Ministry of Public Security	Consular Department or Department of Foreign Affairs of HCMC.
3	Documentation requirements	a) Written application form for extension of temporary residence *Following information must be clarified: Full name, birth date, nationality, sex, number and code of passport, passport issuance date and expiry date, occupation, title, entry purpose, expected extension period, demands for grant of new visa (if any) of the applicant foreigner. b) Passport remaining valid after expiration of the permitted extension period or laissez-passer;  c) Application form to be completed to apply for visa or temporary residence extension (using the form No. NA5 attached to the Circular No. 04/2015/TT-BCA), bearing certification and stamp of the foreign inviting or sponsoring organization.	a) Written document stating or diplomatic note on notification/application for temporary residence extension *Following information must be clarified: Full name, birth date, nationality, sex, number and code of passport, passport issuance date and expiry date, occupation, title, entry purpose, expected extension period, demands for grant of new visa (if any) of the applicant foreigner. b) Applicant foreigner’s passport remaining valid for more than 30 days after the permitted extension period c) Application form to be completed to apply for visa or temporary residence extension (using the form No. NA5 attached to the Circular No. 04/2015/TT-BCA), bearing certification and stamp of the foreign inviting or sponsoring organization. d) Any foreigner entering Vietnam visit any member of a foreign mission in Vietnam must submit 1 photocopy of that member’s ID card issued by Directorate of State Protocol or HCMC’s Department of Foreign Affairs. e) Any foreigner who is a contract employee of a foreign mission in Vietnam must submit 1 copy of valid employment contract.

5	Exceptions (under regulations laid down in clause 4 of Article 5 in the Circular No. 04/2016/TT-BNG)		- Any foreigner granted visa exemption to enter into Vietnam may obtain permission from Consular Department or HCMC's Department of Foreign Affairs to get single or multiple temporary residence on condition that the latter extension period is not longer than the former temporary residence period specified in the application.
