A Vietnamese America was sentenced to life imprisonment for transporting drugs.



A Vietnamese American has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the accusation of illegal transportation of drug” which is a serious crime according to Article 194 Vietnam Criminal Code. 

Mr. Ding Jackson, who was born in 1973, was reported that he had hidden over a kilogram of drug in his underwear. He is believed to have transported this amount of drug from Australia to Vietnam through the airline. At Tan Son Nhat International Airport, while he was doing his check-in procedure, the Vietnam authority has detected that he was hiding several small packets. After examination, the substance in those packets has been revealed to be drugs.

As mentioned in the indictment, Mr. Ding Jackson went to a casino in Las Vegas in January 2013. At this casino, he had lost all his money to gambling. He then met a men whose name is Maico (unidentified background). Ding Jackson borrowed this men 20. 000 USD to continue gambling with the hope that he could retake the money he had lost. However, Ding Jackson had also lost 20 000 USD to gambling. After that, Ding Jackson was requested to go back to Vietnam in order to work for Maico in order to pay for his debt.

Because there is no job available in Vietnam for Jackson at that time, therefore, Maico suggested Jackson should have a vacation in Australia and he accepted it. On 12th June 2013, Jackson met Maico in restaurant in Ho Chi Minh city. At the restaurant, Maico gave him three packets of drug which weighed up to more than a kilo. He asked Jackson to transport those packets to Australia. Maicao also promised that there would be no debt left between him and Jackson. Maico also convinced Jackson to do it for him by giving Jackson an addition of 10 000 US dollars. Jackson accepted this request and then Maico put 3 packets of drug into Jackson’s underwear.

According to the Justice Journal, the official newspaper of Vietnam People’s Supreme Court, Ding Jackson has admit all of his accusations. Jackson’s personal lawyer protested the judgment of the Court with the reason that Jackson had fallen from the stairs to the ground and this had limited his cognitive abilities.

The forensic examination showed that the heroin proportion of the drugs that Jackson transported is 52,07%. After considering all the factors around this case, the judges has decided to apply the life imprisonment to Jackson’s accusation.

In a quite similar case last year, a defendant had been sentenced to death in the court of first instance. However, the judgment had been then changed in the court of second instance.

Illegal transportation of drugs under any kinds is a very common that committed by the foreigners. It is a very serious crime according to 1999 Vietnam Criminal Code. Therefore, you should always be aware of the unidentified packages which is placed in the airport. I strongly advised against helping others to carry some kinds of unknown packages through the airlines.
