Vietnamese sovereignty on East Sea is being threatened once again?
The Chinese drilling rig HD-981 has been reported that it is moving towards Vietnamese Northern Gulf.
Yesterday, the representative of Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs- Mr. Le Hai Binh gave a speech that he emphasized that “Vietnam resolutely oppose China to immediately cancel their drilling plan and withdraw their rig out of the current area. There should be no more one sided action that is taken to complicate the situation at the moment and China should have more contribution to the peace and stability to the East Sea”.
As being announced, the position of Chinese drilling rig HD-981 is in a very sensitive area. This area is believed to be under sovereignty dispute between Vietnam and China. This area, which also border the Northern Gulf of Vietnam, is one of the strategic sea area of Vietnam. China is also accused of violating Declaration on Conduct of the Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) and United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
HD-981 is the same drilling rigs that has already created serious disputes between Vietnam and China in May 2014. The conflict in this case has been raised into a very high tension which there had already been some of noticeable collisions that were reported by both Vietnamese ships and Chinese ships. This case took place at the area of Paracel Islands and Spratly Inslands- which Vietnam has proved that they could provide undeniable evidences in terms of historical factors as well as legal basis to officially announce that those Islands are completely belongs to Vietnam.
In this press meeting, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam also mention about those two islands and about the illegal action that China keeps taking on. He once again insisted that Paracel Islands and Spratly Islands are a part of Vietnam and the actions that China is carrying on on those islands are illegal and invalid. At the same time, China is initiating the operation of a lighthouse on Spratly Inslands.
The return of the oil drill HD-981 has its own political conspirators. The act of taking HD-981 closely to the Northern Gulf of Vietnam would create a mass attention on the public in Vietnam and in the world. Therefore, the main purpose of China on the Paracel Islands and Spratly Island could be performed without any significant objections from the public. HD-981 is designed to be a mean of exploring oil. However, it has been modified to a political tool that Chinese government are taking control of.
Under the pressure that has being created by the continual actions of China, Vietnamese government would have a lot of things to do in order to show that the sovereignty of Vietnam is not an untouchable matter. It could not be denied that China is a bigger country than Vietnam in many aspects, however, from the past up to now, Vietnam has never be dominated easily by any other big countries including China.
